Senior Environmental Corps [SEC]
The Cobbs Creek Senior Environment Corps (SEC) is looking for new members.

What is the Senior Environmental Corps?
SEC (Senior Environment Corps) is one of CCCEEC’s programs for seniors, age 55+.  SEC accepts persons younger than 55. SEC is a diverse group of people who love to learn and grow and are willing to share their talents and expertise with others.  SEC offers training workshops and conferences on environmental issues.  All programs are free.  The Corps takes steps to remediate any toxins found in the water and monitors various sites to help protect our drinking water supply.

Dr. Edward Chun meets with SEC corps members monthly for training and to test the water quality in Cobbs Creek.  Come join the Cobbs Creek SEC.  The Corps meets the third Thursday of each month from 9:30 A.M.-1:00 P.M. at the Cobbs Creek Environmental Center.  Refreshments and lunch are served during the training.  New members are welcomed.  Contact Dr. Beatrice Mickey at (215) 658-1900 or Fred Lewis, SEC Coordinator, at (215) 848-7722.





    

Bird Watching Club
CCCEEC is looking for a few committed serious birdwatchers to form a Bird Watching Club in Southwest Philadelphia. The Bird Watching Club is still in the planning stages. Individuals interested in helping to form a Birding Club should call (215) 685-1900 and leave your name and contact information.




    
Annual National Day of Service for Youth

CCCEEC, the Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia, and the Fairmount Park Commission
host the Youth National Day of Service in April of each year.  The National Day of Service provides the opportunity for approximately two hundred youth from numerous congregations throughout the region with a day of environmental stewardship.  The Youth Leadership Team, comprised of young men and women from diverse religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, plays a major role in organizing and carrying out the the National Day of Service.

  

Service. Several youth are pictured participating in the ceremonial tree planting 2008 and 2010, In addition to environmental stewardship, youth have an opportunity to participate in cultural events, dramatic presentations, and artistic workshop. This annual event provides a great occasion for youth from all over the Philadelphia metropolitan area to join together as “Green Faith Heroes” in 2008 and “Being a Good Ancestor” in 2010 working harmoniously to care for and protect one of our greatest resources: The Natural Environment.

    
The Literacy In Science Watershed Writing Project
The Literacy In Science Watershed Writing Project is sponsored in partnership with The Verizon Foundation. The Watershed Writing Project prepares middle school students to meet the Environment and Ecology Academic Standards for Watersheds and Wetlands, provides hands-on writing in science, pen pal writing about environmental issues, science lab experiments, and a one-day Watershed Stewardship community service event. Teachers receive training to enhance hands-on science teaching as well as “free” online professional development and educational resources through the Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity.org professional education resource center.

The Park Management For Youth Program (PMFY)

The Park Management Program for Youth is a six-week summer youth environmental stewardship training program for high school students ages fourteen to seventeen. Communities In Schools of Philadelphia, Inc. in partnership with the Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center offers an academically enriched environmental work experience that includes stream maintenance, trails construction, urban forestry, and urban organic gardening. Students conduct water quality studies, clean up the park, develop trails, and learn skills that further their own personal development. PMPY students work twenty hours a week and earn minimum wage. PMPY offers high school service learning and community service credit.

Registration starts in March. Students must have a work permit, copy of their birth certificate, current physical examination, copy of photo identification (school ID), and a copy of the social security card. Southwest Region Environmental Science Clubs

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) in partnership with CCCEEC sponsors the Southwest Region Environmental Science Clubs (ESC). Environmental Science Clubs operate in elementary, middle and senior high schools. Clubs meet during school hours and after school. Educational field trips are a key component of ESC. The PWD sponsors educational trips to help club members learn about water conservation, the water treatment process, water pollution, stream maintenance, and recycling. The Environmental Science Clubs program is offer to schools at no cost. The Lomax Family Foundation and The Philadelphia Water Department are CCCEEC’s sponsors for the Southwest Region Environmental Science Clubs.



The Literacy In Science Watershed Writing Project The Literacy In Science Watershed Writing Project is sponsored in partnership with the Verizon Foundation. The goal of the Watershed Writing project is to prepare elementary and middle school students to meet the Environment and Ecology Academic Standards for Watershed and Wetlands in addition to direct instruction in writing in science. Students will participate in a science writing contest, a weekly one-hour science lab, Pen Pal writing, and a one-day Watershed Stewardship community service learning event. Teachers, who participate in the Watershed Writing Project, will receive training to enhance hands-on teaching of Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology with specific emphasis on watersheds and wetlands, and writing in science. Teachers will receive “free” online professional development and educational resources through the Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity.org free professional education resource center.


Founder’s Seminars CCCEEC is committed to providing public forums to keep the community apprised of imminent environmental challenges, energy conservation services, green jobs, healthy living, and other topics of interest to the community. Seminars are scheduled during the following months: November, February, April, and June. If you are interested in attending a seminar during any of the months listed, please call CCCEEC to reserve a seat. Each seminar will accommodate fifty attendees. Your registration will be acknowledged, and an information sheet will be forwarded to you regarding the upcoming seminar. There is no fee for participation in monthly Founder’s Seminars.

The Youth Leadership Team, comprised of young men and women from diverse religious backgrounds, plays a major role in organizing and carrying out the National Day of Service.


PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) Preparation Program CCCEEC offers a PSSA Reading and Writing Prep course for elementary and middle school teachers and students in grades 3-8. The course is offered once a week and consists of twenty, 90-minute sessions commencing in November and ending in March. The course has a dual focus: direct instruction in test-taking, reading and writing strategies using the PSSA test format, and authentic professional development that takes place simultaneously with direct instruction. The course features specially designed instruction in QAR (Question Answer Relationships), POE (Process of Elimination), Word Substitution to answer PSSA vocabulary questions, TAG-IT A 3, two-step approach to inferential questions, and so forth. The PSSA Prep whole class course is available to schools from 10:30-12:00 Monday through Thursday. Classes are held at CCCEEC. Schools are responsible for transportation.

Weekly Laboratory Science Program CCCEEC’s Laboratory Science Program is designed for elementary and middle school students in grades four through eight. The Laboratory Science program uses a whole class approach. The classroom teacher and CCCEEC’s environmental educator work cooperatively using a team teaching approach. CCCEEC’s Science Lab Program is designed to complement and enhance classroom instruction in science by providing hands-on learning opportunities in a state-of-the-art science lab. Scheduling for lab classes is flexible. The cooperating teacher and CCCEEC’s environmental educator collaborate on the content of the lab experience. The program is offered in ten-week segments (generally a marking period); however, depending on the needs of the school, scheduling is flexible. Lab classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday. The cost for a ten-week segment is $1, 000. Schools provide transportation to CCCEEC. Contact Dr. Beatrice Mickey at (215) 685-1905 for additional information.
